The displeasure of your tribe-mates has come to a head, and rather than split the tribe asunder, your king/queen has chosen to abdicate...or else has been violently overthrown.

Event: Abdication

Dialogue: Renouncing the Throne

Now that your clan has renounced its claim to the throne, a tribal moot has been convened to choose a successor.  Your clan's influence is low because of the events leading to the king's/queen's abdication, and you are given no role in the political jockeying prior to the formal moot. You learn that the two leading candidates for the throne are the <W Clan> chief <X> and <Y>, chief of the <Z clan>.  <X> was the most aggressive in fomenting rebellion against your king/queen.  <Y> was a moderating influence who often argued to give your king/queen another chance.
  1. Give gifts to other clans.
  2. Humbly abstain from choosing a new king.
  3. Support <Y>.
  4. Support <X>.
  5. Attempt to find a compromise candidate.

Dialogue Variant: Monarch Overthrow

Note:  This is a variant off of the above, but the consequences are the same for both.

Your clan has suffered the ignoble shame of having its king/queen killed by the other clans in the tribe.  Now, a moot has convened to choose a successor.  Your clan's influence is almost nonexistent because of the events leading to the kinq/queen's killing, and you are given no role in the political jockeying prior to the formal moot.

Consequences

  • Giving gifts is simply you trying to raise the esteem of your clan in the eyes of your other tribe-mates by bribing them with goods and cows.
  • If you lack the goods and cows, abstaining from choosing a new king will raise your reputation with your tribe-mates.
  • If you choose to support <Y>, you may end up hurting his/her case of gaining the throne unless you give heavy bribes.  Success will have them on cordial terms with you.
  • If you support <X>, the one who helped lead the rebellion, you acknowledge the other's leadership, and may earn some brownie (and brown-nosing) points with the other clan.
  • You can try to find some other candidate, one which would be entirely in your pocket, but for your candidate to succeed you may have to give heavy bribes in cows/goods.  Odds are good your candidate will lose, though.

Event: Rite of Kingship

Rites of kingship
The new king/queen has been chosen, and it is time for <X> of the <Y Clan> to undergo the rites of kingship.  It is a time of celebration, yet also of suspense:  It is possible that <X> will be harmed by enemies attracted by the magic of the rite, or devoured by angry spirits if he fails to precisely replicate the rites laid down by the founder of the tribe.
  1. Entertain influential thanes of other clans.
  2. Entertain members of your clan who have served its interests well.
  3. Lend your magic to aid <X> in his/her rites.
  4. Sacrifice to the gods to aid <X>.
  5. Secretly use your magic to hinder the candidate.

Consequences

  • Entertaining thanes from other clans will improve your relations with your tribe-mates.
  • Entertaining members of your clan improves the mood of your clan, treating the election as a festival.
  • Lending your magic will cause a decrease in clan magic, but improves the odds of the candidate succeeding.
  • Successfully sacrificing cattle/goods to the gods also increases the likelihood of the candidate's survival.
  • Available if someone outside of your clan is undergoing the rites, you can use your magic to hinder the candidate. Success will slay the candidate, but failure means you have a new king/queen.
