Requires A favor due

Beyond the barter of the marketplace, there is another economy going on, the owing and repayment of favors among the OrlanthiOrlanth help those who refuse to repay their debts... Note:  Sometimes you get people asking you to do them a favor, instead of you owing them one.  However, the overall format is still the same.

Event 1 : Information

Dialogue

<X>, a thane of the <A> clan, comes to ask you for information about <Y>, chief of the <B> clan. "We intend to enter into negotiations with <Y>, and hope that you know something about his personality, so that we will be well prepared for out parley with the <B clan>. You owe us a favor, and we will consider your obligation discharged if you give us good information.

  1. "<Y>? We know him well."
  2. "Let us give you a gift, instead of information."
  3. "We don't know anything about <Y>."
  4. "We'll try to answer your questions, but do not guarantee that our answers will be right."
  5. "What do you take us for? A pack of tattle-tales?"

King of Dragon Pass

Tribal King variant: There is a variant if you are the king/queen of your tribe:

"As king of the tribe, surely you know about the clan chiefs. You can afford to let us owe you a favor."

King of Dragon Pass

Consequences

Before you choose anything, consult your advisors. Their facts are usually correct, but will not always match the question being asked.

  • If you decide to answer them, you will be asked one question out of three possibilities, and you have three possible choices to answer with. If your clan ring gave you the answer, trust them. If they didn't, you have no choice but to guess.
  • You can be asked about <Y>'s piety to the gods, bravery, or generosity. There is no way to know the question in advance, and once asked, you are committed to answer.
  • Selecting the wrong answer will lower your reputation with their clan.
  • If you select the right answer, they will return to your tula, thanking you again, and give you some trade goods.

Event 2: Raid

Dialogue

Killer-<X> of the <A clan>, comes seeking your help with a raid against the <B clan>.He reminds you of the obligations you owe to the <A clan>, and tells you that the storehouses of the <B clan> are like a tantalizing fruit, ripe for the picking.

  1. Offer sacrifices to a war god of <X>'s choice.
  2. Politely decline his request.
  3. Send a full war party.
  4. Send only a token force.

King of Dragon Pass

Alliance Variant:  There is are slight changes if the person asking you is in an alliance.  It is thus:

He reminds you of the alliance between the <Y clan> and <Your clan>, and tells you that the storehouses of the <Z clan> are like a tantalizing fruit; ripe for the picking.

King of Dragon Pass

Consequences

Depending on your standing with each of the clans, you may wish to accept or decline this request. If the request is made during Sea or Earth season, it might be a good idea to refuse, or sacrifice on their behalf, instead of distracting your farmers and sending them out on a raid.

  • Refusing to aid them will lower their estime of you, but increase your reputation with the <B clan>, and you will still owe a favor to <A clan>
  • Offering sacrifices to the gods on their behalf will fulfill the debt you owe, but lower the <B clan>'s feelings about you. The customary amount of cows this sacrifice will cost you is 3 to 6 cows. If their raid is successful, they will give you some goods.
  • Sending a full war party may backfire because your army might be greedy, and take more of the plunder than <A clan>'s army, lowering your reputation with them. Your debt will still be fulfilled, but sending a token force might be preferable... sending your people out on the raid will give you the best rewards, in terms of goods.

Alliance Variant:

  • The alliance choices match up fairly well with the above consequences.  However, if you decide not to render aid, then your ally may eventually cancel the alliance, and your reputation may suffer.
